"Negroes Critical of Nixon in Poll."
New York Times, September 21, 1969, p. 58.
A Gallup poll determined that African-Americans were dissatified with President Nixon over many
issues including Vietnam. A portion of the findings are quoted here:
A slightly greater percentage of Negroes said they approved (40%) than disapproved (36%) the
handling of the war. By contrast, whites approved by 54% to 27%.
Race relations and the Vietnam War were named equally often by Negroes as the top problem facing
the nation, but whites named the war over relations by a 4-to-1 ratio.
