Search Tips

The search engine for "African-American Involvement in the Vietnam War" defaults to locating pages which have exact matches for all of the words entered in your search query. If that fails, it then tries to locate pages which contain any words in your search query. In addition, there are several ways to modify the default search behavior.

Phrase Searching
The search engine supports three types of phrase search.

To match an exact phrase, use quotes around the phrase.
Example: "greatest purveyor of violence"

To match a near phrase (within a couple of words), use square brackets [around the words].
Example: [greatest purveyor of violence]

To match a far phrase (within several words), use braces {around the words}.
Example: {greatest purveyor of violence}

Boolean Search
You can use the following boolean operators in your search: AND, OR, NOT. These operators MUST be in capital letters.
Example: (project 100,000) OR (project one hundred thousand)
Example: (central intelligence agency AND cia) OR (federal bureau of investigation AND fbi)
Example: (stokely carmichael) OR (kwame ture)

+ and - Qualifiers
If you prepend a word with (+), that word is required to be on the page. If you prepend a word with (-), that word is required to be excluded from the search results.
Example: +king -martin

* Wildcard
If a query word ends with an asterisk (*), all words on a page which start the same way as that query word will match.
Example: vietnam* will locate vietnam, vietnamese, vietnams, vietnam's, etc.

? Wildcard
If a query word contains a question mark (?), any character will match that position.
Example: m?hamm?d will locate muhammad, mohammed, etc.

All of these techniques can be combined:
Example: (+afro* AND hair*)
