"Negro Deferments Urged." New York Times, April 5, 1967, p. 2.

Tom Myles and Anthony Gittens, two college paper editors at Howard University testified before Congress that the draft was unfair to African-Americans. They therefore advocated an automatic deferment for African-Americans, as well as other oppressed groups, because of the suffering they had already endured. The article also mentions other witnesses called to testify including men who had been drafted while they were apprentices training for a job. A fuller account of this testimony can be found here.
