Detectives John F. McCormick and William E. Grogan of the New York Police Department also
introduced several relevant items into the record. For instance a speech given by Eldridge
Cleaver and Abbie Hoffman a speech they had personally recorded at Iona College on October 11,
1968. In this speech Cleaver states, "...and we recognize you Brother Ho Chi Minh, what
you're doing. That you're trying to liberate your country from the imperialists and we want
to bring the boys home."
Another group observed by the detectives, the Black Unity Party, held a series of activities
and classes including Black history, self defense, Swahili, and a class on "The
Vietnam War - The Draft and Black People."
An article from the March 24, 1968 New York Times is also included describing the plans of the
New Left to disrupt the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. The item details how the
planning conference had a "separate but equal" philosophy. In order for the
"Black Power" leaders to maintain a sense of independence from the organization
as a whole, they met separately from the mostly all white National Mobilization Committee
to End the War in Vietnam group, "in keeping with current black separatist philosophy."
